The Penguinista Manifesto

March 27th, 2000 (Draft Form)

We are the Penguinistas,

and we are organized: Penguinista.org has a manifesto. Naturally, there are reasons we Penguinistas broadcast packets over the Internet. Keep reading.

We the Penguinistas:

have the coolest name on the Internet;

Well, that's just the way it is.

provide easy-to-use Linux documentation;

We primarily serve documentation online which has been written and compiled by other documentation projects, but strive to do so in a fashion which makes a large body of knowledge as accessible and useable as possible.

report news of interest to Penguinistas everywhere;

We report stories from a plethora of other websites, as well as publish original articles written by Penguinistas, generally in our own inimitable fashion.

support open source philosophy;

We report on articles which explain the precepts of the open source approach to software development.

and

advocate the use of Linux.

Well, you shoulda seen that one coming.

More about Penguinista.org:

We affirm the use of the open source development model whenever practicable, but we are not fundamentally opposed to closed-source, or proprietary software as are some open source advocates. In other words, we lean philosophically more toward the Open Source Initiative rather than toward the Free Software Foundation.

We believe that Linux should be made available to "the masses" and made to be user-friendly in that context. In other words, we are not command-line-only types, and we welcome newbies.

We believe that it is not in the best interest of Linux or other open source projects to be overly judgemental toward other computer-users using closed source software or operating systems, even if said products come from Redmond, Washington. Sooner or later these people will be unassimilated on the merits of the alternative, and not as a result of the judgements of those already using the alternative. In other words, we thoroughly discourage looking down upon Windows-users, since we feel that they will one day be drawn to run Linux anyway; in the meantime, they are no less welcome here.

We are the Penguinistas. Join us.
